Credit Card Debt Relief ◦ How to File Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy Intake Form

People who inquire at the Statesville and Mooresville, North Carolina, bankruptcy law firm of Gourley & Griffin, P.A., typically approach our bankruptcy lawyers with a great deal of anxiety. No one likes the idea of avoiding financial responsibilities by filing bankruptcy. At the other end of the process, however, our clients express a sense of relief as they make a fresh start and begin right away to rebuild credit while still under our guidance.

To schedule a face-to-face consultation about chapter 7 bankruptcy, chapter 13 bankruptcy, or any topic relevant to your financial crisis and bankruptcy laws, contact us through this Web site or by phone at 704-872-5051 in Statesville, 704-663-7122 in Mooresville, or toll free 800-411-1188.

We rarely see repeat business from our clients who have successfully filed bankruptcy. Once the burden of unmanageable debt has been lifted after a job layoff, a divorce, or a medical crisis has wreaked havoc with family finances, our clients get a new handle on life as they rebuild credit with confidence.

What Bankruptcy Can and Cannot Do

Bankruptcy may make it possible for financially stressed individuals to:

  • Discharge liability for most or all of their credit card debts and other debts, and get a fresh start. When the debt is discharged, the debtor has no further legal obligation to pay the debt.
  • Stop foreclosure actions on their home and allow them an opportunity to catch up on missed payments.
  • Prevent repossession of a car or other property, or force the creditor to return property even after it has been repossessed.
  • Stop wage garnishment and other debt collection harassment, and give the individual some breathing room.
  • Deal with some types of tax problems

However, bankruptcy may not:

  • Wipe out student loans.
  • Erase child support obligations.
  • May not get rid of more recent taxes.
